PLB Sports president Ty Ballou says Roethlisberger is “falling short” of the company’s standards after a Georgia prosecutor announced Monday he will not prosecute the quarterback over sexual assault allegations.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league would review the facts–in accordance with its personal-conduct code–and would follow up with Roethlisberger and the Steelers. He gave no time line.

The company said in a statement on Tuesday that facts presented at the prosecutor’s news conference led to the decision.

The company sold “Big Ben’s Beef Jerky” in bags depicting the quarterback at Pittsburgh area Giant Eagle supermarkets and GetGo convenience stores.

The same company markets a breakfast cereal endorsed by Steelers receiver Hines Ward and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Max Talbot.

Possible options include a suspension, fine, or having the quarterback undergo counseling or rehabilitation.

The team retains the option to discipline the quarterback even if the league does not. The team had no comment Tuesday.

In a separate case, Roethlisberger is being sued in civil court by a former Nevada hotel employee for an alleged sexual assault in 2008. No criminal charges were filed in that case either.

As a result of the recent spate of bad publicity, Roethlisberger lost an endorsement he had had for five years, with a local beef jerky producer.

If Roethlisberger has even a fraction of the common sense he’s displayed on the football field while winning two Super Bowl titles, the 28-year-old quarterback should realize he’s just about down to his last chance with the Steelers and a city that was fully prepared to love him from the moment he hit town.

Instead, the more successful Roethlisberger has gotten, the worse he’s behaved—ignoring well-meaning advice from past Steelers icons like Cowher and Bradshaw about riding his motorcycle without a helmet before he nearly died in a crash, bristling last season when his all-pro receiver Ward questioned his commitment to the team, drinking robustly and acting crudely in various bars and clubs over the years until he left the lingering impression that, if nothing else, his arrogance is off the charts.

But even Roethlisberger has to recognize he looks one bad incident away from becoming a Rust-Belt version of Michael Vick, another numbskull NFL star whose behavior was so repulsive it finally overrode the fact that he was a franchise quarterback whose sudden absence would wreck his team on the field for years to come.

The Jets won’t be able to unveil their new wide receiver–Santonio Holmes–until Week 5.

The talented, but troubled former Steeler has received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, sources confirmed to the Press.

The league has yet to announce the suspension, but the decision already has been made, sources said. Which begs the question: Did the Jets know about it before pulling the trigger on the trade?

The answer is yes, sources said. Coach Rex Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum spoke to Holmes and his representation by phone before the deal went down late last night. Sources said Holmes is on his way to Florham Park and will meet today with the Jets’ brass.

The team has yet to formally announce the trade, but once Holmes meets with the team and passes a physical, it will become official.

The Jets traded a fifth-round pick for Holmes, a former Super Bowl MVP and first-round pick. No one questions his talent, but he’s had a string of off-the-field issues. In 2008, he was arrested for possession of marijuana and was suspended a game by the Steelers. Just recently, he was involved in an Orlando nightclub incident.

With Holmes, Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards, the Jets have a talented receiving trio for quarterback Mark Sanchez. But Edwards, too, could be suspended. Before being traded to the Jets last October, he was accused of assaulting a Lebron James acquaintance at a Cleveland nightclub. Edwards eventually pleaded “no contest” and he faces a league suspension, although it probably would be only one game.

The Jets were willing to take a chance on Holmes because he’s entering the final year of his contract and they figure that will motivate him to be on his best behavior. It was the same situation with Edwards, who, from all indications, behaved himself last season.

Holmes was best known as Super Bowl XLIII’s MVP for his sideline-hugging, game-winning TD catch as a Pittsburgh Steeler, Holmes is also coming off his most productive season in 2009, producing career-bests with 79 catches for 1,248 yards. His presence gives the Jets potentially one of the NFL’s most explosive receiving corps with WR Braylon Edwards on the other side, Jerricho Cotchery returned to his more natural slot role, promising third-year TE Dustin Keller working the middle and accomplished pass catcher LaDainian Tomlinson coming out of the backfield.

The biggest event on the American Football calendar has been won by the New Orleans Saints.

They beat the Indianapolis Colts, by a convincing 31-17 to win the 44th Super Bowl.

For many in New Orleans, the city on the south coast of the United States which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, this was more than just a game of football.

It was a message to the nation to say: we’re still here and back in business.

Sean Payton arrived as the New Orleans Saints’ head coach on January 18, 2006, less than five months after Hurricane Katrina tore holes in the Louisiana Superdome roof, tearing the very fabric of a proud, historical city, as well as the entire Gulf South.

“As underdogs, we felt like we were the better team,” Payton said.

“We liked the way our guys were preparing for this game. We liked the confidence in the locker room, on the practice field. We liked the spot we were in.”

The Saints, who finished the season with a 16-3 record, trailed by 10 points after the first quarter and didn’t take their first lead until the opening moments of the second half.

It was the way they did it, of course, that will go down in the annals of pro football history.

Payton chose to go for an onside kick to open the second half, while the legendary British band The Who was rocking on the field and the Saints were waiting in their locker room.

Rookie punter Thomas Morstead executed the kick to perfection, as Colts receiver Hank Baskett charged the ball, only for it to bounce off his helmet. Special-teams standout, Chris Reis, made the recovery for the Saints, and six plays later the Saints took their first lead on Drew Brees’ 16-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Thomas.

The momentum was theirs, even though the Colts quickly went back in front on Joseph Addai’s four-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.

The Saints, who finished the season with a 16-3 record, trailed by 10 points after the first quarter and didn’t take their first lead until the opening moments of the second half.

The Saints’ defence started forcing Peyton Manning, the Colts’ gifted quarterback, into some bad decisions, and New Orleans would win going away.

“Everyone knows what the city has gone through,” Saints defender Darren Sharper said. “That’s what makes it special. They’ve wanted it for a long time.”

The Saints made history, all right. They’re the best team in the NFL.
