The 2010 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards unfolded as expected today, with top honors going to Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama ‘The Hurt Locker.’

The film swept the ceremony, winning six awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Bigelow), Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.

‘Avatar’–which is viewed as ‘The Hurt Locker’’s biggest threat for the Best Picture Oscar–won two awards, for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.

Movie director Kathryn Bigelow made history and added to her awards season haul Sunday as ‘The Hurt Locker’ soundly trounced ‘Avatar‘ at the UK’s top movie prize giving.

Meanwhile, the Best Actor race saw its first surprise of the season, as Colin Firth upset Oscar frontrunner Jeff Bridges for his performance in the Tom Ford drama ‘A Single Man.’

With the Oscars less than two weeks away, the Iraq war drama came away with six gongs — including best film and best original screenplay. ‘Avatar,’ directed by Bigelow’s ex-husband James Cameron, had to settle for two prizes: special effects and production design.

Bigelow did not realize she had made history — and become the first female to win the directing award–until after she had picked up her gong.

“It’s a true, true, true honor,” said Bigelow after her win. ” … I didn’t realize that this was a first. So, hopefully, I can only say that it’s the first of many.”

All eyes were on the rivalry between Cameron’s record-breaking 3D epic ‘Avatar’ and Bigelow’s ‘The Hurt Locker,’ to see who would come out on top in what has been dubbed the “the battle of the exes.” ‘Avatar,’ which is the highest-grossing film in cinematic history, and ‘The Hurt Locker’ both had eight nominations going into the awards.

‘The Hurt Locker’s’ BAFTA success adds further momentum to Bigelow’s chances of making history by picking up a best director Oscar–although BAFTA voters often go their own way and choose different winners to their American counterparts.

The “Avatar” novel is a pretty clear next move, and it will mark James Cameron’s debut as a novelist.

During an interview with MTV News, “Avatar” producer Jon Landau confirmed that Cameron will pen a prequel to “Avatar,” focusing on the back story that they likely wouldn’t have time to include in future films.

To be clear, Landau emphasized that this book will not be a novelization.

“There is a distinction,” he said in the interview. “A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things.”

As a result, this work will “go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn’t have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake’s brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that,” Landau said.

It doesn’t look like they’re going to make “Avatar” fans wait long for it either – Landau said the novel could be out by the end of the year.

Romance proved to be a powerful foe for the epic “Avatar,” which has dominated the box office for the last seven weekends. The Lasse Hallstrom-directed romantic drama “Dear John” won the weekend in a big way, grossing an estimated $32.4 million and setting a record for the highest-grossing Superbowl Sunday frame in history.

“Avatar” fell to second place for the first time, dropping a still scant 25 percent to $23.6 million. The James Cameron film has now out-grossed every movie in the history of cinema (as long as we don’t adjust for inflation) with a domestic take of an astounding $630 million.

The new romantic drama “Dear John” unexpectedly ended the seven-week reign of “Avatar” at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, pulling in large numbers of young female moviegoers.

“Dear John,” directed by Lasse Hallström, is the latest movie adapted from a novel by Nicholas Sparks and remixes many of the requisite gooey ingredients – star-crossed lovers, terminal illness, romantic beachside gambols, a crate load of hankies. “The Notebook,” starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, was the template for this sort of thing, and “Dear John” barely reworks the formula.

Channing Tatum plays John Tyree, a Special Forces soldier who falls in love with moony, idealistic Savannah, played by Amanda Seyfried, while on leave visiting his autistic father (Richard Jenkins) in South Carolina. (He cooks lasagna without fail every Sunday, so you know something’s odd.)

Lots of letters are dispatched between these two lovebirds, which is a testament not only to their enduring ardor but also to the postal system, which unfailingly reaches John in top-secret hideaways in, from the look of it, Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

“Dear John” grossed an estimated $32.4 million in the three-day period since opening Friday, said distributor Screen Gems, the low-budget division of Sony Corp..

In third place at the box office was spy story From Paris with Love–starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as CIA men trying to crack a terrorist plot – which took 8.1 million dollars.

In the film, Sam Worthington acts as Jake Sully, a United States. marine who’s paralysed from the waistline down. Sully is enrolled to visit a planet called Pandora, an aesthetic moon enshrouded with deep woodlands and glorious waterfalls and occupied by a broad range of unthinkable life forms even the planet’s native population called the Na’vi. Sully will take part in the Avatar program, whereby he will occupy the torso of a genetically masterminded Na’vi hybrid called an Avatar.

When Sully transforms to an Avatar, his life switches. He’s blue, he is 10-feet tall and he can walk freely about the planet (human beings can’t take a breath of Pandoran air). On his first rendezvous on the planet, Sully comes across a good-looking female Na’vi called Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and for assorted reasons, he’s established into the clan. The Na’vi are fully knowledgeable that Sully is a crossbred so clearly not everybody in the clan is pleased about his bearing. But Sully isn’t at that place to cause troubles. He’s merely been expected to keep an eye on the Na’vi, to discover about their civilisation and their habits.
