Souness on Liverpool Meltdown

‘The Champions League is vital for Liverpool going forward and I fear for them. If they don’t qualify for the Champions League next year then the banks will come down heavily on them because that’s a big income stream gone. ‘
With the kind of debt that they are carrying at this time, the banks will say that you need to get some money in. The obvious choice is your biggest assets. The biggest asset they have right now is their centre forward (Torres).

‘Liverpool need to forget about the Europa League and the FA Cup to concentrate all their efforts on finishing in the top four because that’s imperative for their future.

‘I fear they are in meltdown. If they don’t reach the Champions League next year, the best players won’t want to play for Liverpool.

‘They are hundreds of millions of pounds in debt and they need a new stadium to keep up with the rest and just stand still.
‘All those scenarios are frightening for Liverpool supporters.’

‘He’s the main man, he’s our top scorer and we need him back firing. If that happens I’m sure we’ll get in those top four places.’

Alberto Aquilani also made his first start since his summer move.

He said: ‘It’s a difficult time for me to come into the team, because we are in a difficult place at the moment.

‘That makes it harder for any player to start with a new side.
‘It’s not the season I was expecting when I signed for the club, that’s true. I was expecting to play in the Champions League, to find ourselves competing for trophies.’

Rafael Benitez on Liverpool Meltdown

“meltdown” at the club this week but Benitez said: “There is always criticism but I don’t listen. I turn off the volume on the TV.”

He added sarcastically: “Both have fantastic records as managers, so the fans ignore what they say.

“We have to win, we have a responsibility and we must concentrate on our job.

“If someone talks too much, it is their problem, but the fans know the record they both have as managers, fantastic.”

Gerrard on Liverpool Meltdown

Gerrard said: “Meltdown is for him to say, I can’t predict that far ahead. But for me, as captain, I’ve got to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“We’re up for the challenge – there’s no time for hiding.

“We need to get out there, roll up our sleeves and get this football club back where it belongs – that’s as far up the league as possible.

“We’re the players that are responsible for where we are in the league so we need to get it right. We must play better. We need to get back into a top-four position as soon as possible. It is the No.1 priority now.

“At the start of the season we had intentions of being in the title race, especially after finishing second last year.

“That was a big confidence boost. It gave us the belief we could fight all the way, but we’ve had a bad start. The idea now is to get people back fit, get back to full strength and start moving up the League.

“I’m confident we can do that if we get everyone back fit.”

I’m a die hard liverpudian i agree with Souness.lets us be frank,Rafa is leading our dear club into a ditch. He has lost it.and he needs to go.

  2. Sarah Tute says:

While Rafa is at the helm Liverpool will go nowhere, I said the same months back, nothing has changed my word, he must be replaced and soon.

  3. David says:

I used to be a big Rafa fan but the time has come for him to step down. I hope Arsenal batter us just so we can get rid of him. Thanks for the cups Rafa now go.

  4. Matty Liverpool fan says:

Who are the fans that are backing Rafael Benitez? Our manager started losing the plot when he started ranting and raving, he is making our club into a laughing stock. LET SEE HOW MANY PRO BENITEZ POSTS THIS ARTICLE GETS!!! The newspaper’s say we want him. well we dont!

  5. Tim Ellison says:

Move on Rafa we no longer want you.

  6. Col Manu Fan says:

RAFA YOU ROCK. MANU FANS WOULD LIKE YOU TO STAY AT LIVERPOOL:-)

  7. Leeds says:

Let’s all laugh at Liverpool once mighty now crappy.

  8. Rick B says:

The way I see it’s not all his fault. Rafa was forced to sell to bring some much needed funds in. We are in big shit if we miss the Champions league. The club can’t afford to pay him off in any case so we are stuck with him, we must back him or our club could die like Leeds did.

  9. John says:

The fact that Rafa doesn’t even want to listen to criticism says it all. If we keep playing with two defensive midfielders and our ship will sink.

  10. Danny Jones says:

Rafael Benitez claims his Anfield players are fully behind him as he bids to get Liverpool’s disappointing season back on track. It your tactics not the player’s effort.

  11. Dennis says:

@David are you really a Liverpool supporter? I cannot understand how any supporter would want his team to lose; I admit that it’s time for a change at the top. We are being left behind.

  12. Less says:

We have lost again; fourth spot is going to be very difficult now. I was 100% behind the manager before today. This has gone on far too long now, if the manager had any pride he would walk but i guess he will wait to be sacked and walk on with money we can’t afford to lose. Shame on you Rafael Benitez!

  13. Peter says:

All the big clubs have their own TV channel, Manu have MUTV, Chelsea have Chelsea TV, Arsenal have Arsenal TV and Liverpool have the history channel. Walk on!

  14. Robert Flooks says:

rafa must go , he has lost the plot, play gerrard in midfield, he has lost the changeroom, and the confidence of the players. problem is the owners cant afford to let him go, i quess we are going under like leeds united did and Southampton

  15. Arshavin_#23 says:

STAY RAFA PLEASE WE OTHER BIG FOUR CLUBS LUV THE WAY YOU’VE TARNISHED LIVERPOOL’S NAME.

  16. greame says:

50 years ago to the day, when our club was a shithole, bill shankly saved us – fast forward to 2009, and we’re in the worst position since bill first came, so we need a new shankly, a new saviour, a new lease of life and i believe that will come in jose mourinho!!!
