Ohio State Univ. shooting incident kills 1 and injured 2
An early morning shooting today at an Ohio State University campus maintenance building left one employee dead and two others wounded, the university says. A suspect has been taken into custody, but officials have not determined any motive for the shootings. The two wounded workers were taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where one was in critical condition and the other was in stable condition, he said. The third employee was pronounced dead at the scene. Ohio State, the nation’s largest university, said no students were hurt and that classes would be held as scheduled.
The suspect had fatally shot himself afterwards.
University Police Chief Paul Denton on Tuesday identified the suspect as 51-year-old Nathanial Brown, a custodial employee. Denton says Brown recently received a poor performance evaluation, but he declined to say if that was a motive for the shooting.
No students were hurt.
“The site location has been secured and there are some traffic restrictions around the building,” the university said on its Web site. “The university continues normal operations. Classes will be held and normal work schedules are in effect.”
Denton says Brown was pronounced dead at Ohio State University Medical Center several hours after the shooting, which was first reported at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
One of the victims, 48-year-old building services manager Larry Wallington, died at the scene.
Henry Butler, 60, an operations shift leader, was taken to OSU Medical Center, where his condition is stable.
The other is hospitalized in stable condition.
Brown was hired in October.
“This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to all of the families,” Vernon Baisden, the university’s director of public safety, said at a news conference.
