Movie Adaptation of Video Game “Prince of Persia” to Invade Theaters

Walt Disney Studios has premiered the new trailer for producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, opening in theaters on May 28 with casts that include Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell.

Uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s latest would-be blockbuster is a movie adaptation of the videogame “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, and rumor has it that Michael Bay is on board as director.

This is from the same team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, an epic action-advent which will find you set in the mystical lands of Persia. A rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhal) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Gemma Anterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Directed by Mike Newell (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”), and a screenplay by Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard from a screen story by Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters Memorial Day Weekend, 2010.

Two months from now Iron Man 2 premieres, and from there it’s a quick jaunt through May before we get the biggest video game adaptation of the summer, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Disney is committed to making sure you don’t forget about Jake Gyllenhaal and his abs, so a new trailer for the film as debuted over at IGN.

The Prince of Persia poster made its debut as a background prop in a 2009 Bruckheimer production, Confessions of a Shopaholic, similar to how Akiva Goldsman incorporated a poster for his undeveloped Batman vs. Superman script for a joke in I Am Legend.The week of Confessions of a Shopaholic’s release, Disney signed a merchandising deal with Lego for the film.

Disney’s marketing strategy includes a step by step release of the film. Prince of Persia will be released first in Europe, premiering on May 19, 2010 in France, Sweden and the Netherlands and on May 20 in Germany. In the US and UK, the release of Prince of Persia was postponed to May 28, 2010 in order to profit by higher viewer numbers on Memorial Day weekend.
