Purchasing advertisement has been the backbone of most business for well over 100 years now and since the inception of the internet business world or ecommerce as it is most commonly referred to, there is no exception.  It is completely expected for any business person on the internet to purchase advertising, being able to place their ad on another website that links the prospective customer or client back to your website.

The problem is that some people are putting their links on websites and paying to do so without keeping in mind that the audience that goes to that site is not the type of audience they are trying to attract and basically they are just throwing money out of the window.

Search engines also rely on your link to be of use to the person searching and if you have a bunch of links at many different sites going back to your website, that will increase your ranking, however if the links are being found to not be useful to most, then it will hurt you more than help you.

Making sure that your target audience is the one getting the most benefit from your links through other websites via the webmasters, is something that is a must, however it would be just like throwing your ad on a radio station or channel that no one listens to or watches, or that is not geared towards the type of customers or clients you are looking for.

The key is to test the demographics to what audience you want to target and there are many tools out there to help you achieve this but there are also people who do this for a living and will do it for you to save you the headache of having to do all of it by yourself.  After all, you have a store front to run or a business to concentrate on, getting the word out can be tough and having the extra help would be nice and beneficial on your part.

Whichever way you decide to go, make sure that wherever you are placing your link ads it makes sense to what relates to your business.  If you are selling power tools you are not going to want to place your ads on a teen website, make sense?

Additionally, as I mentioned, doing non-sense ads will hurt your rankings on the search engines as well.
